Finally, they had snuck out and scaled the uneven stone wall and the roof with its tiles of fired clay. Avelynne had made the climb with the happy whisper of, “I bet I couldn’t have done this a few weeks ago!”

The only one unable to scale the building had been the snowtiger, but Kall had simply walked out the gate and gone around. The guards had either not cared or not dared stop him.

Their walk down to the lake was now turning into more of a run, energy spiking in their bloodstreams as they dared to escape.

It was growing dark, the skies above painted in dim blues and dark purples. Hale spotted the moon, and elbowed Avelynne while saying, “Look at that full, fat yellow ball. It thinks it can hide in those clouds and leave us in the blinding dark.”

“Ah. Well, it is sorely mistaken. Young Master Hawthorn wants his fresh air, changing leaves, and his moonshine. Nothing will stop him.”

He was about to reply, but Avelynne’s attention was taken by Kall nuzzling her hand. Damn animal.

The banks surrounding the lake were crawling with creeping vines and thorny bushes. They stuck to the path and then took care as they undressed to only their long tunics.

From all corners, there were glances sneaked as the clothes fell away. Sabina and Avelynne made jokes about this being the closest to being in dresses they’d been for weeks. Like him, they didn’t appear too uncomfortable in their scant clothing. In fact, there was a hum of excitement emanating as much from them as from himself. It was only the four of them here in the dark. Why would they be shy? Eleksander was a different story. As the two lasses discussed whether or not Sabina should undo her braid, Eleksander turned to Hale and murmured, “This tunic only barely covers my… modesty.”

Hale clapped him on the back and whispered back, “Are you bragging about the size of your modesty, brother?”

Eleksander opened and closed his mouth like a fish, making Hale laugh and say, “It’s fine, just don’t stretch your arms up high until you’re in the murky water.”

“You’re right, I suppose. I’m going to hurry in.” Eleksander ran for the water, holding his tunic down.

He laughed with abandon as he splashed into the water. This was clearly where he felt at home, half submerged like some water god of old. He began swimming and Hale understood where he got those broad shoulders. Hale grunted, lamenting not having grown up surrounded by lakes and the sea.

As the moon came out from the clouds, Avelynne appeared and followed Eleksander into the lake. Hale chased her, making her giggle and squeal. Sabina sighed theatrically as she slowly strode in after them all, ignoring their calls to hurry up. She ordered Kall to stay by some bushes and the snowtiger happily began washing, occasionally checking on his mistress.

Hale luxuriated in the water licking at his skin and soaking his tunic. He dove under the surface and didn’t come back up until his lungs protested.
